Global warming & Carbon Dioxide

The Problem:

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is a significant greenhouse gas and the massive CO 2 emissions due to the profligacy of our modern consumer-oriented society are a major contributor to the Greenhouse Effect - the warming of the Earth's climate. If present trends continue, global temperatures will rise significantly this century, leading to widespread flooding of coastal areas, changes to rainfall patterns and an increase in stormy weather.

The Solution:

By using petrol powered vehicles we each contribute to the build up of co2 in the atmosphere so we each have the opportunity, and the responsibility, to do something to solve the problem. Government level initiatives such as the Kyoto Protocol will only slow the rate of warming; this will not prevent the damage unless we start to realise we could see an environmental disaster in our lifetime. We each need to take personal action to achieve a solution and that's what freedom2drive is trying to do.

The solution to global warming is to reduce co2 emissions which can be done at a personal as well as a national level. Minimising the use of fossil fuels and living more lightly upon the earth are eminently feasible – all that is required is the individual and collective commitment to put these principles into practice.

Obviously it is not possible to eliminate all CO2 emissions immediately, so in the interim the next best thing is to ‘offset' emissions by planting trees. Trees absorb CO2 as they grow and therefore forest restoration is also a positive step to counter global warming. Trees For Life is offering to plant trees as part of the work to restore the Caledonian Forest and therefore help offset the contributory effects of travel on global warming. Approximately one third of the co2 we pump into the atmosphere comes from car exhausts but all forms of travel that use fossil fuel emit co2 into the atmosphere. The best option is to travel less and use public transport for those journeys that are necessary
